- Named in honour of a former league player famous for a goal on the run from the half-back flank during the 1977 VFL Grand Final replay, Phil Manassa
- First awarded in 2001
- Officially known as the Goal of the Year
Voting:
- After each round and the first three weeks of the finals, three nominations for the Goal of the Week are determined by a panel of AFL selectors
- Since 2006, the public could vote for the Goal of the Round on the AFL website
- The winner is chosen by the All-Australian selection committee from all nominated goals, whether they won the weekly vote or not
Eligibility:
- The player must create and score a difficult goal in play
